Watford Colosseum Wins Retrofit Project of the Year
‘The best retrofit projects don't just preserve the past, they create a future for it’
We're delighted that the transformation of the Watford Colosseum has been recognised with Retrofit Project of the Year at the Herts & Beds Constructing Excellence Club Awards 2026. This award reflects the collective effort required to breathe new life into a historic asset while ensuring it can meet the demands of a modern venue for decades to come.
As delivery architects working with Morgan Sindall Construction, Holmes Miller helped navigate the complexities of retrofitting a Grade II listed building beginning with its decarbonization phase. From detailed technical coordination and conservation-led design solutions to resolving unforeseen site challenges, integrating modern infrastructure and accessibility requirements, interventions demanded careful consideration within a sensitively restored Art Deco building. Technical design, coordination and construction-stage problem solving are critical to transforming ambitious proposals into deliverable solutions, particularly within complex historic buildings where every decision carries wider implications.
Projects such as Watford Colosseum demonstrate the value of retrofit in extending the life of important cultural landmarks, reducing embodied carbon and ensuring historic buildings remain relevant, resilient and accessible for future generations.
Thanks to everyone involved for their expertise and collaboration in helping deliver the project and achieve this recognition.
