Holmes Miller were appointed by South Lanarkshire Council for the design and delivery of the new Larkhall Leisure Centre – a contemporary, inclusive, and sustainable facility that will become a focal point for health, wellbeing, and community activity in the town. Replacing the existing 1960s centre, the new building has been designed to provide accessible, flexible, and inspiring spaces that meet the needs of a diverse and growing population.

The project places people at its core, fostering vitality, wellbeing, and inclusivity. Designed to Sport England and Sport Scotland standards, the centre promotes participation for all ages and abilities. Key facilities include a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with a movable floor, a wellness suite with sauna and steam rooms, a fully equipped gym, a multi-use fitness and dance studio / community hall, and a three-court sports hall. Changing areas are designed to the latest accessibility standards, ensuring comfort, dignity, and ease of use for all visitors.

The new centre is developed using Passivhaus principles to achieve exceptional energy performance and environmental responsibility. Key strategies include passive solar design, thermal zoning, and the use of low-carbon, high-performance materials such as Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). These measures are projected to significantly reduce operational energy use compared to typical leisure facilities, minimising carbon emissions and creating a resilient, future-ready building that supports long-term climate goals.

Rooted in the local context, the new leisure centre is designed as a welcoming civic landmark that enhances community life in Larkhall. The building’s form and materiality respond sensitively to its surroundings, while landscaped public areas strengthen visual and physical connections with the town. By providing spaces for sport, wellbeing, and gathering, the project reinforces Larkhall’s identity as a vibrant, active, and inclusive community.
