Holmes Miller was commissioned by Celtic Football Club to remap and redesign the Barrowfield Training Centre in the East End of Glasgow — a site rich in heritage and central to the Club’s long-term player development strategy.
The ambition behind the project is to create a state-of-the-art training environment that serves the needs of Celtic’s youth academy, reserve squads, and the women’s and girls’ teams. The redevelopment reflects the Club’s commitment to nurturing talent at every stage, combining elite sporting facilities with spaces that support education, wellbeing, and personal growth.
Internal facilities have been designed to mirror the professional standards of Celtic’s first team training base, ensuring a seamless pathway for aspiring players. A full-size covered 3G synthetic pitch hall will allow year-round training in all weather conditions, complemented by a high-performance gymnasium with dedicated cardio and strength & conditioning areas. Players will benefit from modern changing facilities and showers, as well as a welcoming dining hall and lounge to encourage team spirit and recovery. Classrooms and educational spaces will provide a platform for academic development and analysis, while a dedicated manager and coaches’ department ensures the centre functions as a fully integrated high-performance hub.
Externally, the masterplan delivers a blend of natural and synthetic playing surfaces, including three elite-level grass pitches and an additional 3G synthetic pitch. These are supported by specialist tactics and training areas, designed to give coaches flexibility in preparing teams for competitive match environments.
Together, these facilities will transform Barrowfield into a comprehensive training campus that reflects Celtic’s vision: to combine footballing excellence with education and community, ensuring the next generation of players — male and female alike — have the tools to succeed on and off the pitch.
