Plans submitted to transform Allan’s Primary School in Stirling

Holmes Miller has submitted a planning application to Stirling Council for the refurbishment and extension of Allan’s Primary School, working alongside Morgan Sindall Construction.

The proposals will modernise the existing Category B listed school on Spittal Street, creating a more flexible and inclusive learning environment while protecting the building’s historic character.

Designed to support current teaching methods, the project will provide improved classroom space, new breakout and shared learning areas, and better connections to outdoor play. A new extension will replace the existing 1990s addition, creating additional accommodation and a roof terrace to increase outdoor learning provision.

The plans also include significant upgrades to accessibility, with a new entrance, improved routes through the site, and lift access between levels. These changes will make the school easier to use for pupils, staff and visitors alike.

Alongside these improvements, the design prioritises the careful repair and restoration of the original building. Key elements of the sandstone structure and internal character will be preserved and enhanced, ensuring the school continues to play an important role in the life of the Stirling community.

Yida Zhou, Project Architect at Holmes Miller, said: “This project is about making the school work better for today while respecting what makes it special. We’ve taken a careful approach to restore the character of the original building, improve accessibility, and create flexible spaces that support how teaching and learning are evolving. The new extension gives the school the additional space it needs, while also strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor learning.”

The project is being developed in partnership with Stirling Council and Morgan Sindall Construction, with a shared focus on delivering a high-quality learning environment that responds to both educational needs and the building’s historic setting.
