St Mary’s Stadium
Holmes Miller led a design team of dedicated professionals in the creation of the new 32,500 capacity St Mary’s stadium in Southampton.
Situated on a disused 12 acre gasworks site adjacent to the River Itchen, the completed project has enabled the club to realise their ambition in moving from the outdated Dell stadium, with its limited capacity of 15,000, to a state of the art modern stadium.
Uniquely this move not only retained the club and its stadium within their home-city but it also allowed the club to return to its ancestral roots in the parish of Saint Mary’s. Early works on the site involved extensive remediation and a comprehensive archaeological exercise which uncovered the remains of an early Anglo Saxon settlement.
Architecturally the Stadium was designed with the structure expressed, using distinctive mast imagery, referring to Southampton’s international maritime status.
As part of Southampton City Council’s involvement in the project and its commitment to art in public places, feature glass artwork by a local artist is incorporated into the Main Entrance space.
