Merchiston Castle School, New Sports Facilities
Holmes Miller have developed proposals for a new Swimming Pool and Sports Centre for Merchiston Castle School, a private school for boys located to the West of Edinburgh. The school is situated within the conservation village of Colinton, and occupies a mature parkland setting overlooking the Water of Leith, and providing views to Corstorphine Hill and Edinburgh Castle.
Working in close conjunction with the School, and landscape architects Horner + Maclennan, the Holmes Miller designed buildings will provide a range of new facilities including a 4 court sports hall, 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, teaching facilities and changing rooms.
Positioned to the North of the listed buildings that comprise the Merchiston Castle School campus, the new buildings are embedded within steeply sloped terrain, to minimise visual impact on approach from the South. In a similar manner, the separation of the Swimming Pool from the Sports Complex ensures that the views towards Corstorphine Hill from A Listed Gibson House, within the heart of the campus, are unaffected.
The new buildings are purposefully designed with a limited palette of materials, to create an aesthetic that is both contemporary yet restrained, ensuring they sit quietly against the backdrop of the listed buildings, whilst signifying the confidence and vision of the School to deliver an outstanding environment for learning.
A well-considered landscape proposal accompanies the new buildings, working within the challenging terrain, and maintaining the mature trees on site to create an attractive and appropriate setting for the new facilities, that integrates as part of the overall parkland campus.
