First Direct Arena, Leeds

The First Direct Arena, a purpose built entertainments venue for hosting large indoor concerts and events, officially opened for business in early September, with The Boss – Bruce Springsteen, the first big name to grace its stage. The 13,500 capacity arena, designed and built as a fan shaped ‘super theatre’, provides a unique concert going experience to guests and artists alike, with all seats facing the performance area, accompanied by world class hospitality facilities. The venue can host a variety of event types, ranging from large scale concerts to smaller scale sports events, such as tennis and basketball. The iconic external design is capable of altering appearance through an ever changing kaleidoscope of coloured lights, programmable to reflect the requirements of individual performers.

Holmes Miller provided the role as Lead Consultant for the Technical Advisor team for the Client, Leeds City Council, from detailed design through to completion and are proud to have been involved in the delivery of such a prestigious and successful project, built by BAM Construction (North East) and designed by Populous and Arup. The role required Holmes Miller and their TA team, with their extensive experience in this building type, to act as the Client’s eyes and ears to ensure the exemplar design was thoroughly realized. This was achieved through giving informed advice from a proven process of reviews on the design, the works information and ultimately the construction works on site.
