New Prison, Holmsheidi, Reykjavik
This competition entry to design a new custodial facility in Reykjavik, for the Icelandic Government, draws from Holmes Miller’s considerable justice experience and seeks to explore innovative concepts in building layout and design.
The single storey proposal takes reference from the surrounding dramatic landscape of mountains and lava fields, and uses infuences from traditional Icelandic architecture as it’s inspiration, tying it to its context.
A series of landscaped pitch roofs are draped over simple wings of accommodation, with courtyard gardens allowing light in and views out, whilst maximising visual supervision. A well considered landscaping scheme fully integrated with the building helps to strengthen the concept further and helps to create a strong and clear visual character.
