HMP Grampian
In October 2010 a Holmes Miller led team was appointed by The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) to undertake Design Team Services for the creation of an Exemplar (Stage D+) design for the proposed new HMP Grampian facility. The facility will replace HMP Peterhead and HMP Aberdeen and will be built on a site adjacent to the existing facility at Peterhead.
The new facility will be the first of several new Community Facing Prisons which will house all categories and ages groups of prisoners, both male and female. As such it will be unique in the UK.
The design uses the site topography, together with carefully considered adjacencies and circulation routes, to provide a highly efficient layout which exceeded The SPS’ expectations in terms of the degree to which different prisoner groups can be separated during day to day activities.
The SPS are viewing the exemplar design for HMP Grampian as a transferrable and scalable model which will form the template for further new Community Facing Prison facilities.
The design resulting from this commission was used as part of the Invitation to Tender (ITT) process for the appointment of delivery contractor on a Single Stage Design and Build basis. Holmes Miller was appointed as part of Skanska’s successful team to deliver the project on site.
