HMP Glenochil in Clackmannanshire holds long-term adult male prisoners. The Scottish Prison Service’s development plan for the establishment has been implemented in four phases by Skanska. Holmes Miller has provided Architectural and Lead Design services on phases 2, 3 and 4.
Phase 2, completed in January 2007, comprises the provision of a new-build Houseblock, Health Centre and Visits/Staff Facilities Building, together with the refurbishment of an existing building to create a new Laundry; Phase 3 was completed in January 2009 and comprises new-build Gatehouse/Estates/Stores/Administration complex and new Kitchen/Reception building, and; Phase 4, completed in December 2010, comprises new-build Physical Recreation building, Education/Programmes/Link Centre/Multi-Faith building, together with refurbishment of existing Regimes (workshops) and the replacement of the outer perimeter fence with a perimeter wall. Over these phases, Holmes Miller’s involvement has encompassed the entire range of accommodation required in a modern custodial establishment.
The establishment remained fully operational and at optimum capacity throughout the works.
Holmes Miller worked in tandem with the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) to lead the key stakeholders through the brief development and concept design stages of each phase. This ensured that the best value solution was delivered in each instance, and that all parties, were not only satisfied with, but felt a strong sense of ownership over, the final designs.
