New Primary Lenzie

Following a detailed period of consultation with the Council, School and Community, Holmes Miller were appointed to design a replacement primary school in Lenzie, which would replace the existing Lenzie + Lenzie Moss Primary Schools.

The project references the SFT exemplar school, developed by East Dunbartonshire Council, and provides teaching accommodation, flexible resource space, PE, dining and assembly facilities for 560 pupils, along with a dedicated nursery catering for 2-5 year olds.

Constructed on the existing grass pitch, the new building occupies an enviable site, with open views to the South, overlooking the natural landscape of Lenzie Moss, and aspect to the North, towards the Camspie Fells. The building design takes advantage of this outlook, with a large South facing courtyard positioned at the centre of the plan, which the single sided teaching wings all address. The large central dining + assembly space also connects to this courtyard ensuring it becomes the focal heart of the school.

All classrooms are provided with access to dedicated external teaching spaces, either adjacent the building, or at first floor above the feature pods that articulate the building elevations. The classrooms are all semi-open plan, providing direct access for all pupils to a double height flexible resource space, which offers dedicated Art, Science, Cooking and presentation areas, to supplement the formal teaching spaces within the school.

The school have been extensively consulted throughout the development of the project, with pupils and staff engaging on aspects such as the internal layout, furniture + decoration, exterior material and colour choice, to ensure the new facility meets the requirements of teaching staff and reflects the new identity of this co-joined school community.
