Holmes Miller working in close partnership with City of Edinburgh Council have secured Planning for the new Bangholm Sports & Outdoor Centre. The Centre will offer 3,000m2 of new accommodation, involving the creation of a bespoke Outdoor Centre which encompassed the Schools PE facilities; both physical and theory-based, community learning spaces, outdoor education team centre, bike-ability clubs and local hockey and rugby clubs. The brief also included a public café which could work alongside the school and provides a fully accessible space for the community throughout the school day and also acts as a social space for the sport clubs. The Outdoor Centre is one of only 3 in Scotland with the others situated at Lagganlia and Benmore, which aim to deliver specialised provision for outdoor learning, including adventurous activities, technical advice and training, teaching and learning support, and advice about outdoor learning awards. A key driver from CEC’s perspective is to drive efficiency in floor space and maximise the use. Holmes Miller has worked in conjunction with the School, Edinburgh Leisure and the community to work out the most efficient arrangement of floor space, arranged to bring increased footfall and integration into the local community as a new ‘Social Hub’ solely focused around Sports and outdoor learning. The design also includes a 'fabric-first' approach to ensure the most efficient and substantial building, to meet City of Edinburgh's 2030 Net-zero targets.
